The Queen City's music scene is expanding alongside its skyline, with the NoDa and Plaza Midwood neighborhoods emerging as cultural engines. The Fillmore Charlotte and Visulite Theatre host rock and indie acts, while Snug Harbor and The Evening Muse cultivate jazz and hip-hop in smaller rooms. Charlotte's Southern soul meets modern ambition in a city that is quickly outgrowing its banking-town reputation.

Charlotte's musical roots run deep into the 1950s rhythm and blues era, when Nappy Brown hit the national charts and Wilbert Harrison recorded Kansas City. The Catalinas helped pioneer the Beach Music genre, and the 1966 WAYS Battle of the Bands at the Coliseum showcased 27 regional acts. The Double Door Inn became a proving ground for Southern rock before its closing.

The Fillmore Charlotte, in the AvidXChange Music Factory, hosts mid-size national touring acts with industrial flair. Charlotte has produced Nappy Brown, whose R&B hits shaped the early rock era, and Fantasia, the American Idol winner and R&B vocalist. Anthony Hamilton, the Grammy-nominated soul singer, also has deep Carolina roots. The Avett Brothers, raised in nearby Concord, have long performed in the area.

New musicians should visit The Evening Muse for its songwriter-focused atmosphere. Open mic nights at Smokey Joe's Cafe on Tuesdays provide a friendly stage for newcomers.
