Hampden is a suburban town just south of Bangor along the Penobscot River. School music programs, church choirs, and acoustic folk gatherings carry most of the live sound, with Bangor-area musicians often crossing the town line for rehearsals and small performances.

Music occurs at the high school auditorium, Congregational and Catholic church halls, the town community center, and local pubs in nearby Bangor. Outdoor summer concerts are held at the town park.

Local and regional artists perform here, with musicians from the nearby Bangor scene occasionally passing through.

New musicians can join the school band or a church choir, attend Bangor open mics, and look for acoustic sets at local coffeehouses. Larger paying work is generally found in Bangor or Portland.
