Shreveport's musical identity was forged inside the Municipal Auditorium, where the Louisiana Hayride launched Elvis Presley and Hank Williams into national radio. That crossroads of country, blues, and rockabilly still reverberates along the Red River, from blues jams on Fannin Street to the Highland Jazz and Blues Festival. The city's Black Bottom neighborhood gave rise to a soul and gospel tradition that runs parallel to its honky tonk heritage.

Shreveport's reputation was cemented by the Louisiana Hayride, a live radio broadcast from the Municipal Auditorium that introduced Elvis Presley and Hank Williams to national audiences. That country and rockabilly foundation sat alongside a blues tradition rooted in Fannin Street's juke joints. The Black Bottom neighborhood added gospel and soul that still influences the city's sound.

The Municipal Auditorium still hosts concerts in the same hall where the Louisiana Hayride broadcast, its art deco interior preserved. The Noble Savage Tavern downtown books acoustic songwriters, folk acts, and small jazz combos. Several Red River district bars carry blues and rock acts on weekends. The auditorium remains the city's most storied stage for larger touring bills.

Shreveport has produced or launched artists such as Kenny Wayne Shepherd, the blues rock guitarist, and Lead Belly, the folk and blues legend from nearby Mooringsport.

Start at the Noble Savage Tavern on an open mic night to meet the city's folk and blues players. The Municipal Auditorium hosts occasional jam events where local musicians gather. Blues jams still convene at bars along Fannin Street on select evenings. The Shreveport Regional Arts Council offers musician resources and connects artists with festival and gallery performance opportunities.
