Lafayette's identity was forged in the Acadiana prairies, where French settlers preserved ballad traditions and later absorbed African and Caribbean rhythms. The Creole community developed zydeco by replacing the fiddle with accordion and adding rub board percussion. The Blue Moon also holds regular Cajun jam sessions open to fiddlers and guitarists. The Cajun French Music Association maintains a calendar of jams and dance lessons for musicians learning the regional style.
