Bands & Musicians in Rhode Island

Rhode Island punches above its size. Art students at the Rhode Island School of Design formed the core of Talking Heads in Providence, and Newport produced Throwing Muses and the family pop band the Cowsills. The city's Fort Thunder warehouse scene spawned the noise rock of Lightning Bolt, and Newport's folk and jazz festivals at Fort Adams have drawn national audiences for generations, including Bob Dylan's electric turn.

Providence holds the club circuit: the Columbus Theatre, Fete Music Hall, and the Met just over the line in Pawtucket cover indie, punk, and touring bills, with AS220 booking experimental shows downtown. Newport's folk and jazz festivals at Fort Adams remain the state's signature annual events, and the city's bars fill with players each summer.

Talking Heads formed from RISD connections, and Newport gave rise to Throwing Muses and the Cowsills. Providence's experimental wing produced Lightning Bolt and the indie band Deer Tick, with later names clustering around the capital city's tight club network.

Providence is effectively the whole scene, with open mics, practice spaces, and all-ages shows packed into a few walkable neighborhoods, and rents lower than nearby Boston.
