Bands & Musicians in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's two poles tell different stories. Philadelphia's signature soul sound came from Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International Records, the city hosted early rock and roll via American Bandstand, and it later shaped hip-hop through DJ Jazzy Jeff, the Fresh Prince, and the Roots. Pittsburgh's jazz lineage runs from Billy Strayhorn and Ahmad Jamal to George Benson, and the city later produced Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller.

Philadelphia's circuit runs from Union Transfer and the Fillmore Philadelphia down to indie rooms like Johnny Brenda's and World Cafe Live. Pittsburgh answers with Stage AE, Mr. Smalls Theatre just across the river in Millvale, and the singer-songwriter room Club Cafe. Bethlehem's Musikfest and the venues of State College round out the statewide circuit.

Billie Holiday was born in Philadelphia, and John Coltrane built his early career there. Later generations include Patti LaBelle, Hall and Oates, the Roots, and Dr. Dog from the Philly side, with Pittsburgh contributing George Benson, Wiz Khalifa, and Mac Miller.

Philadelphia offers the deeper bench of venues, open mics, and working musicians, while Pittsburgh's scene is compact and affordable with strong rock and jam nights.
