Bands & Musicians in Manitoba

Winnipeg punched above its weight from the start, producing The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive in the classic rock era and raising Neil Young, who cut his teeth in local band the Squires. Later decades brought Crash Test Dummies, the literary indie rock of The Weakerthans, and the political punk of Propagandhi from Portage la Prairie. The Winnipeg Folk Festival and the francophone scene in Saint Boniface keep roots music central.

Winnipeg's circuit spans the Burton Cummings Theatre, the West End Cultural Centre, and the Park Theatre, with the Times Change(d) High and Lonesome Club booking roots and country acts. The Winnipeg Folk Festival fills Birds Hill Provincial Park each summer. Brandon supports a university-driven scene with campus and downtown stages.

The Guess Who, Neil Young, and Bachman-Turner Overdrive all came out of Winnipeg, joined later by Crash Test Dummies and The Weakerthans. Propagandhi formed in Portage la Prairie, and singer Chantal Kreviazuk also hails from Winnipeg.

Nearly everything funnels through Winnipeg, where Osborne Village and the Exchange District hold the open mics and rehearsal rooms, and folk fest connections turn into gigs.
